Winter to Spring Edition
I don’t know about you but January - February is my least favorite stretch of year for fashion. I’m cold, I’m tired and I’m uninspired. It feels too early to be shopping for spring, especially if like me you’re in Canada or the Midwest, there’s still snow on the ground and our winter coats are in heavy rotation. So what’s a girl to do?
Playing with Layers
I have had fun with layers over the last few months. I don’t know what rock I was living under in previous years but a turtleneck + dress = HEAVEN. Not only is it a great way to keep spring/summer pieces in rotation for fall/winter, but you’ll also be warm and feeling extra stylish.
I like to stick to a monochromatic color palette when doing the dress layering thing (black on black is always a safe bet) but I’ve also seen rich jewel-toned slip dresses paired with black tight turtlenecks underneath and it looked awesome. It’s all about finding a combination that you feel comfortable with.

Lighten Up
Another way that I’ve been alleviating the winter blues has been with a lighter color palette. You know I’m an all black outfit girl at heart but sometimes it’s fun to deviate from the norm if you feel like you’re in a style rut. A cozy sweater in an unexpected pastel color is my favorite way of adding a kiss of spring to a cold weather outfit.
I’ve also been obsessing over light wash denim. From light blue to cream (and eyeing a white pair as well) lighter-hued denim is all I’ve been wanting to wear on the weekends. I recently wore this head-to-toe creamy beige outfit paired with a bright lip and I felt so cozy yet totally ready for spring at the same time. Again, something I had seen online for a while but never felt brave enough to replicate - partly because I constantly stain every light piece of clothing I own, partly because it’s so hard to leave my black outfit comfort zone.

Beauty Notes
If you’re looking for a bright punch of color this coming spring, look no further than YSL Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain $37 in the color 1 “Rouge Tatouage”. Shade number 1 is the brand’s famed red and is available in all their lip formulas but I am partial to the Tatouage Couture form. It is incredibly long wearing and comfortable. It leaves a gorgeous stain behind and the red shade has such a lovely skin-brightening undertone to it. I also wore it on the cheeks in the photos below.
Application tip: to get more out of your liquid lip colors, let them do double duty as a blush! I learned this tip from Katie Jane Hughes on Instagram and it’s genius. First apply the product to your lips, and before you let it dry down, take a blush brush and dab it a couple of times on the lips to pick up some product then apply it on your cheeks. I find a synthetic stipple brush works best for this task - the Small Stipple Brush $3 from E.L.F. Cosmetics is my personal fave. Works like a treat on all cream cheek products and it’s only three bucks. Win!
